About This Course

Maya Rigging Basics Volume One

Welcome to Maya Rigging Volume One. This is not just another "button-pushing" tutorial. This is an 11-hour, university-level curriculum designed to teach you the underlying logic of Maya rigging.
We focus on the connectivity of knowledge—how individual concepts link together to solve complex production challenges. Whether you are a complete beginner or a 3D artist looking to strengthen your technical foundations, this course will train you to think like a professional Technical Artist.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

The "Why" behind the "How": Master Maya’s dependency graph and architecture.
  • Core Fundamentals: Naming conventions, transformations, and parent relationship.
  • Constraints: Deep dive into Parent, Point, Orient, Aim, and Scale constraints (and the math behind them).
  • Attributes: Master the creation, editing, and connection of Custom Attributes, along with driving systems like Set Driven Keys.
  • Utility Nodes: Build logic networks using the Node Editor with math and logic nodes
  • Controls: Design clean, animator-friendly interfaces with the correct hierarchy structure and shapes.
  • Capstone Project: Build a production-ready Car Rig featuring advanced suspension, automatic wheel rotation, steering ratios, and more.

02

Foundational Logic

We look past the interface to understand Maya's core architecture. In this module, you will master production-standard naming conventions, the logic of hierarchy, and clearly understand the concepts behind Transformations and Gimbal Lock.

56m

03

Constraints

We go deep into Parent, Point, Orient, Scale, and Aim constraints, looking under the hood at how they actually drive transforms. You will learn to manipulate weights, understand rotation interpolation types, and apply vector math logic to build complex mechanisms like a Stewart Platform.

122m

04

Attributes

We start with the core mechanics of Custom Attributes—learning how to properly create, edit, and connect them to drive your rig. We then expand into driving systems like Set Driven Keys and Expressions, understanding the distinct role each method plays in a production pipeline.

83m

05

Utility Nodes

We dive deep into the Node Editor to build sophisticated logic networks using Maya's native architecture. You will learn to use essential math and logic nodes—including multiplyDivide, condition, and remapValue—to drive complex mechanical behaviors efficiently.

82m

06

Control

A professional controller is more than just a curve shape; it acts as the bridge between the rig and the animator. This section establishes the standard workflow for control creation, focusing on the correct hierarchy structure needed to ensure the rig is clean, organized, and easy to reset.

07

Capstone Project: Production-Ready Car Rig

Apply everything you have learned to build a complete, production-ready asset. We guide you through the entire rigging pipeline: from initial model inspection and hierarchy setup to complex mechanics like wheel steering angles, steering ratios, automatic wheel rotation, and a detailed suspension system. Finally, we cover rig cleanup and detailed shot setup workflows to automate animation in production.
