Why This Course
Taught by Someone Who Ships
Arvid has 33 IMDB credits across ILM, MPC, and Image Engine. Dune, The Mandalorian, Ready Player One. This isn't theory. It's how shots actually get done.
The Full Pipeline, Not Just the Pretty Part
Most courses stop at the render. This one goes through Nuke: color matching to real photography, 3D clouds, anamorphic lenses, film grain. The stuff that makes CG look like film.
You'll Never Get Stuck
Every module has a downloadable HIP file checkpoint. Fall behind, skip ahead, or just compare your work. The Nuke script ships with every gizmo pre-installed.

What's Included
15 Hours of Video
51 lessons across 10 modules. No filler intros, no 20-minute tangents. Dense, focused, production-relevant content.
HIP Files Per Module
9 checkpoint scenes so you can jump in at any stage. Every module picks up exactly where the last one left off.
Complete Nuke Script
Full comp setup with Cloudtastic, PxF ZDefocus, apChroma, CG Dirt, and P_Matte pre-installed. Reusable AOV templates included.
Discord Study Group
Get feedback on your work, ask questions, and learn alongside other students. Arvid drops in regularly.
Perfect For
Environment Artists
You know the basics but your environments still look like tutorials. This gives you the full pipeline: terrain, scatter, shade, render, comp. Your next piece will look like it came off a show.
Lighting TDs
You light shots all day but never built the environment yourself. Understanding the full context, from heightfield masks to MaterialX primvars, makes you a better lighter.
Career Builders
You need a portfolio piece that stops recruiters mid-scroll. A cinematic island environment with proper comp work stands out from the sea of grey-shaded turntables.
Houdini Curious
You've been meaning to learn Solaris, MaterialX, or Karma XPU but haven't had a reason. This course is that reason, and you'll pick it up by building something real.
About This Course
Build a Cinematic Environment From Scratch
What Makes This Different
Real Production Pipeline
- Not a toy project. Build a photorealistic island based on a real location (Pulau Kansong Sami, 280x610m measured on Google Maps)
- Industry workflows. Same Solaris/LOPs, MaterialX, and Karma XPU pipeline used on Dune, The Mandalorian, and Avatar
- Full post-production. Don't stop at the render. Composite in Nuke with the same anamorphic lens treatment used in cinema
Techniques You Won't Find Elsewhere
- OP: path ocean trick. Reference Ocean Spectrum directly in MaterialX, eliminating ~32GB of displacement texture writes
- USD primvar shading. Drive per-instance vegetation color, roughness, and glossiness variation from scatter attributes
- Biome-driven scattering. SideFX Labs Project Dryad tools with real-world temperature/precipitation rules
- Cryptomatte color matching. Grade CG to match real island photography using per-channel RGB gain
Tools & Plugins Used

Introduction & Project Setup
Set the foundation for your cinematic environment. See the final result, learn professional reference gathering with PureRef and ShotDeck, then establish a Solaris/LOPs project structure ready for production.
Terrain Foundation
Build your island from the ground up using Houdini's heightfield system enhanced by Kruger Terrain Tools (KTT). Master resolution-independent workflows that let you iterate freely, shaping a convincing landmass driven by real-world reference.
Terrain Detailing
Transform your blocked terrain into a weathered, realistic landscape. Stack GPU-accelerated erosion passes, add terracing and scree, scatter Megascans rocks, and build a comprehensive mask pipeline that drives all downstream shading and scattering.
Biome System Setup
Unlock SideFX Labs' biome tools from Project Dryad. Define vegetation rules based on temperature, precipitation, and soil conditions to scatter the right plants in the right places automatically.
Scattering & Asset Population
Bring your island to life with vegetation, rocks, and environmental debris. Scatter palm trees, ground cover, and beach details using the biome system, set up initial terrain shading, and optimize the scene for production-scale performance.
Water & Ocean
Add the ocean surrounding your island using both shader-based and ocean spectrum approaches. Build animated wave displacement, shoreline foam masks, and underwater depth with proper terrain texturing beneath the surface.
Lighting & Shading
Master Karma XPU and MaterialX to bring your environment to photorealistic life. Build layered terrain materials from baked heightfield masks, drive per-instance vegetation variation through USD primvars, and refine ocean foam and wave normal detail.
Rendering
Prepare your scene for final rendering. Configure Karma XPU for production quality, set up AOVs and Cryptomatte, animate five cinematic camera shots, and handle per-camera render output with proper alpha and denoising settings.
Compositing in Nuke
Transform raw Karma renders into polished cinematic frames in Nuke. Assemble AOVs with OpenDRT color management, reference-match your grade to real photography, add 3D clouds, atmospheric depth, and a full anamorphic lens treatment pipeline.
Conclusion
Reflect on the complete pipeline you've mastered: PureRef references through Solaris rendering to Nuke compositing. Review key techniques and explore paths for continued learning.
